Check Engine Light MIL / OBD

Issue

Emission, ignition, fuel or sensor fault. On SQ8 4.0 TFSI common: misfire (coil packs), O2 sensor, EVAP leak.

Symptoms
  • Constant or flashing MIL
  • Rough idle, hesitation, loss of power
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible smell of unburnt fuel
Detailed diagnosis
  • 1. Check fuel cap – loose cap triggers EVAP code.
  • 2. Read codes with VAG‑COM/VCDS (generic OBD-II may miss manufacturer codes).
  • 3. Inspect ignition coils (known fail on high-performance V8).
  • 4. Test mass airflow sensor & boost pressure sensor (SQ8 twin-turbo).
  • 5. Smoke test intake for vacuum leaks.
Repair cost range: $150 (loose cap) – $2200 (cat converter) / coil pack ~$400 each

Oil pressure warning

Issue

Low oil pressure – can destroy engine in minutes. Often caused by low level, faulty sensor, or worn oil pump (SQ8 high mileage).

Diagnosis
  • Immediately check oil level (dipstick).
  • Listen for chain rattle (tensioner related).
  • Measure oil pressure mechanically with gauge (spec: min 2.0 bar at idle).
  • Inspect oil pressure switch – common failure on EA825.
  • Remove oil pan to check pickup tube clogging (sealant pieces).
Cost: oil change + switch $200; pump $1400–$2500; full rebuild $6000+

Battery charge / alternator

Issue

Failing alternator, battery, or wiring. SQ8 has high electrical load (air suspension, MMI).

Symptoms
  • Red battery light on dash
  • Dim headlights, slow crank
  • Infotainment reboots
Diagnosis
  • Multimeter: engine off ≥12.4V; running 13.8–14.8V.
  • Load test battery (AGM battery specific).
  • Check alternator belt tension.
  • Inspect ground strap (driver’s side) for corrosion.
Cost: AGM battery $300–$480; alternator $900–$1500; wiring harness $200–$500

Brake warning pad wear / fluid

Issue

Pad wear sensor contact, low fluid, or ABS fault. SQ6/SQ8 often trigger pad wear indicator early.

Symptoms
  • Red brake light, message “BRAKE PADS”
  • Squealing, pedal feel changes
Diagnosis
  • Inspect pad thickness through wheel.
  • Check brake fluid reservoir level.
  • Scan for pad wear sensor codes (can be broken wire).
  • Test brake light switch (often causes ESC light too).
Cost: pad set (front) $250–$400; sensor $25–$60; fluid flush $140

Airbag / SRS

Issue

Fault in passive safety system – often seat belt latch, passenger occupancy sensor, or clock spring.

Symptoms
  • Airbag light stays on
  • “SRS fault” message
Diagnosis
  • Scan with VCDS (address 15).
  • Check connectors under seats (common corrosion).
  • Steering wheel clock spring test.
  • Belt tensioner resistance measurement.
Cost: clock spring $380–$600; seat sensor $400; module reset $150

ABS warning

Issue

Wheel speed sensor failure, tone ring damage, or ABS pump fault. SQ8 rear sensors prone to rust.

Symptoms
  • ABS light yellow, sometimes with ESC light
  • Pulsating pedal at low speed
Diagnosis
  • Read fault codes (CXXXX).
  • Inspect sensor wiring for damage.
  • Measure resistance (1.1–1.8 kΩ).
  • Check reluctor ring for cracks.
Cost: speed sensor $150–$280; ABS module $1100–$2000 (remanufactured $600)

ESC / stability control

Issue

Steering angle sensor uncalibrated, yaw rate sensor fault, or brake light switch.

Symptoms
  • “ESC” or “ESP” light on
  • Traction control inactive
Diagnosis
  • Check brake lights operation.
  • Recalibrate steering angle sensor (VCDS).
  • Inspect yaw sensor (under center console).
Cost: calibration $120; steering angle sensor $450; yaw sensor $650

Power steering

Issue

Electric steering rack fault or overheating (SQ8 heavy front).

Symptoms
  • Red/yellow steering wheel symbol
  • Heavy steering at low speed
Diagnosis
  • Check battery voltage (low voltage triggers steering fault).
  • Scan J500 (steering assist module).
  • Inspect torque sensor wiring.
Cost: steering rack $3200–$4500; motor $1800; software update $150

Coolant overheat

Issue

Low coolant, thermostat stuck, water pump failure (plastic impeller).

Symptoms
  • Red thermometer, gauge high
  • Coolant smell, steam
Diagnosis
  • Check coolant level (expansion tank).
  • Pressure test system for leaks.
  • Verify electric fans operation.
  • Thermostat stuck closed test (infrared temp gun on hoses).
Cost: thermostat $350; water pump $900–$1200; radiator $700

AdBlue / DEF system

Issue

Low fluid, poor quality, injector or NOx sensor fault. Diesel SQ8 models.

Symptoms
  • Amber “AdBlue” light, countdown starts
  • Engine no restart after countdown
Diagnosis
  • Top up with correct fluid (see under trunk floor).
  • Scan for P20xx codes (reductant system).
  • Check AdBlue injector for crystallization.
Cost: AdBlue top $20; injector $700–$1000; NOx sensor $550; tank heater $950

Air suspension warning

Issue

Compressor failure, air leak in strut, height sensor fault.

Symptoms
  • Vehicle sits uneven
  • Compressor runs continuously
  • “Suspension fault” message
Diagnosis
  • Listen for compressor noise (under passenger fender).
  • Spray soapy water on struts for leaks.
  • Check ride height sensor links (broken plastic).
  • Scan J197 for fault codes.
Cost: compressor $1300–$1800; air strut $1600–$2500; sensor $350–$500

Glow plug warning

Issue

One or more glow plugs failed, or relay. Usually on TDI variants.

Symptoms
  • Yellow coil light flashes
  • Hard cold start, white smoke
Diagnosis
  • Measure resistance at each glow plug (0.5–2 Ω).
  • Check glow plug relay (J52) activation.
  • Scan engine module for P0670–P0685.
Cost: glow plug set (6) $180–$300; relay $120; labor $200
