Check Engine Light MIL / OBDII
Issue: Emissions, fuel, ignition, or sensor fault.
- Steady orange light – usually emissions related (EVAP, O2, cat).
- Flashing orange – severe misfire, catalyst damage risk.
- Rough idle, hesitation, poor fuel economy, sometimes no symptoms.
- OBD2 scanner (generic): read codes. Top Fiesta codes: P0420 (cat efficiency), P0300-P0304 (misfire cyl), P0455/56 (EVAP large leak), P0135 (O2 heater).
- Ford‑specific scan (Forscan/IDS): access enhanced parameters (fuel trims, O2 switching, misfire counters).
- Visual & mechanical: inspect vacuum hoses, air filter, PCV valve, gas cap tightness. Listen for whistles.
- Smoke test: for hidden vacuum leaks (EVAP or intake).
- Component activation: using scan tool to command EGR, purge valve, fans.
| Common repair | Parts (OEM/aftermarket) | Total installed $ |
|---|---|---|
| Oxygen sensor (upstream) | $70–$200 | $180–$350 |
| Ignition coil (1.0 EcoBoost) | $65–$120 each | $150–$300 |
| EVAP purge valve | $35–$90 | $130–$260 |
| Catalytic converter (direct fit) | $450–$1300 | $900–$1900 |
Oil Pressure Warning red oil can
Immediate action: stop engine – risk of seizure.
- 🔴 Light flickers or stays red at idle, may go off while revving (worn bearings).
- 🔴 Tapping/knocking noise from top or bottom end.
- Step A – dipstick: level and condition (milky = coolant, metallic = wear).
- Step B – manual pressure test: replace sender with mechanical gauge. Spec: minimum 10psi per 1000rpm, hot idle >20psi.
- Step C – inspect oil filter & pressure relief valve.
- Step D – bearing clearance check (if persistent).
Battery Charge Light red/amber battery
- ⚡ Light comes on while driving, headlights dim, power windows slow.
- ⚡ Burning rubber smell (belt slip) or whine from alternator.
- Voltage test: engine off 12.4V+ ; running 13.8–14.8V. Below 13.2V = alternator weak.
- Load test: at battery shop (free) – checks cold cranking amps.
- Alternator ripple test (oscilloscope) – bad diode causes AC ripple.
- Belt tension & condition, ground straps.
Coolant Temperature red temp / blue cold
Red light / gauge in red zone = stop engine.
- 🌡️ Steam from bonnet, coolant smell, heater blows cold.
- 🌡️ Possible coolant loss (external leak or internal).
- Coolant level check (engine cold).
- Pressure test cooling system – identifies external leaks (radiator, hoses, water pump).
- Thermostat operation: upper rad hose should warm gradually after 10min.
- Combustion leak test (block tester) – detects exhaust gas in coolant (head gasket).
Brake Warning red circle ( )
- ⚠️ Light on: park brake engaged, low fluid, or pressure imbalance.
- ⚠️ Spongy pedal, longer stopping distance.
- Check fluid level in reservoir – if low, inspect pads and for leaks.
- Brake pedal feel: pump with engine off – should firm up.
- Scan ABS module for codes (if both red and amber ABS on).
ABS Light amber ABS
Anti‑lock disabled – normal braking remains.
- Common causes: wheel speed sensor, tone ring, wiring, ABS module.
- Diagnosis: scan ABS codes, measure sensor resistance (800–2000Ω), check for metal debris on sensor.
TPMS Light (!) or flat tyre icon
- Solid = low pressure; flashing = sensor fault / system malfunction.
- Diagnosis: manually check pressures with gauge; use TPMS tool to trigger sensors; check battery in sensors (life 5-7 years).
Airbag Light SRS
Critical safety: airbags may not deploy.
- Diagnosis: scan SRS codes (Forscan required for Ford). Most common: under‑seat connector loose (Fiesta common), clock spring failure, crash sensor.
Power Steering EPS / PAS
Electric power steering fault – heavy steering, warning on dash.
- Diagnosis: check battery voltage (low voltage triggers EPS light), scan for torque sensor codes, check EPS motor connector, recalibration with IDS.
DPF Light diesel particulate filter
Exhaust filter blocked – usually on 1.5/1.6 TDCi.
- Symptoms: loss of power, frequent regenerations, smell, limp mode.
- Diagnosis: check soot load via OBD2, forced regen with diagnostic tool, inspect differential pressure sensor.
AdBlue / DEF Light urea
Low fluid or system fault – engine may not restart after countdown.
- Diagnosis: refill AdBlue (use correct fluid), check NOx sensors, AdBlue injector, heater.
ESC Light ESP / stability
Flashing = system active; steady = fault / disabled.
- Common: steering angle sensor not calibrated, yaw rate sensor fault, brake switch.
Glow Plug Light coil symbol
Flashes = engine management fault (not only glow plugs).
- Check glow plugs & relay, also can indicate EGR or fuel pressure issues.
Start‑Stop Light green A with arrow
Amber / white with slash = system not available.
- Diagnosis: battery state of charge, auxiliary battery (if equipped), neutral/clutch sensor, bonnet switch.
Driver Assist Lights lane keep, pre‑collision
Amber warnings often due to blocked camera/radar, or calibration needed.
- Check front windshield area (camera) and front Ford emblem (radar).
Immobiliser Light red key / padlock
Flashes rapidly – key not recognised, transponder fault.
- Try spare key; check key battery (keyless models); scan for PATS codes.
Master diagnostic & reset guide
- OBD2 adapters: ELM327 (Forscan) for Ford‑deep codes.
- Service light reset: without tool – press accelerator & brake pedals (some models).
- Battery disconnect: may clear some warning lights, but codes remain. Not recommended for driveability issues.
