1. Contact patch – definition & physics

The contact patch is the actual interface where tire rubber meets pavement. For a typical sedan, each patch is about the size of a large smartphone (30–50 sq in). The entire dynamic capability of your vehicle—cornering, stopping, accelerating—relies on these four small areas.

Pressure distribution is never uniform: the center of the patch carries more load when properly inflated. Under-inflation shifts pressure to the shoulders, over-inflation overloads the centre, both reducing total grip.
