Technical Specifications & Capacities
Engine Oil Capacity by Model Year
The Mercedes-Benz CLS 450 has utilized two different engine families since its introduction, each with specific oil capacity requirements. The transition from the M276 to M256 engine occurred during the 2021 model year refresh.
| Model Years | Engine Code | Displacement | Oil Capacity (US qts) | Oil Capacity (Liters) | Oil Filter Type |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2021-Present | M256 | 3.0L I6 Turbo + EQ Boost | 8.5 quarts | 8.0 liters | Cartridge Filter |
| 2018-2020 | M276 | 3.5L V6 Biturbo | 8.2 quarts | 7.75 liters | Spin-on Filter |
Important: These capacities assume a complete drain including the oil filter housing. Actual amount needed may vary by approximately ±0.2 quarts depending on drain time and vehicle angle.
Approved Oil Specifications Table
Mercedes-Benz has specific approval standards for engine oils. Using non-approved oils may void warranty coverage and potentially damage engine components.
| MB Approval | Recommended For | Viscosity Grades | Key Properties | Change Interval |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MB 229.52 | M256 Engine (2021+) | 0W-20, 5W-30 | Low SAPS, Fuel Economy | Up to 10,000 miles |
| MB 229.51 | M276 Engine (2018-2020) | 5W-30, 5W-40 | High Performance | Up to 10,000 miles |
| MB 229.5 | Older Models (Alternative) | 5W-30, 5W-40 | Extended Drain | Up to 15,000 miles |
Professional Oil Change Procedure
Required Tools & Materials
Before beginning an oil change on your CLS 450, ensure you have all necessary tools and materials. The M256 engine (2021+) particularly requires specific tools due to its hybrid system and underbody panels.
| Item | Specification | Purpose | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Engine Oil | 8.5 qts MB 229.52 | Lubrication & Protection | Synthetic only |
| Oil Filter | OEM #A0001800309 | Filtration | Includes O-rings |
| Drain Plug | M12 x 1.5 | Drain Seal | Replace every change |
| Torque Wrench | 20-100 Nm range | Proper tightening | Critical for filter housing |
| Fluid Extractor | 6+ Liter capacity | Optional top-side drain | Recommended for M256 |
Step-by-Step Change Procedure
- Vehicle Preparation: Park on level surface, engage parking brake, and ensure engine is warm (operating temperature) but not hot.
- Safety First: Wear protective gloves and eyewear. The CLS 450’s underbody panels may require removal for drain plug access.
- Oil Drainage: Remove drain plug using 13mm socket or use fluid extractor via dipstick tube for cleaner alternative.
- Filter Replacement: For M256: Remove filter housing cap, replace cartridge and O-rings. For M276: Remove spin-on filter with filter wrench.
- Reassembly: Install new drain plug with washer (torque: 25 Nm / 18 ft-lbs). Refill with calculated amount minus 0.5 quarts.
- Final Check: Start engine, check for leaks, then check electronic oil level via dashboard display. Add remaining oil incrementally.
- Reset Service Indicator: Navigate to Service Menu in instrument cluster and reset oil change counter.
Warning: The M256 engine features an electric auxiliary oil pump for the EQ Boost system. Never run the engine with low oil level as this can cause immediate pump failure and costly repairs.
