Step-by-Step Maintenance Procedures
Complete Oil Change Procedure
Pre-Change Preparation (10-15 minutes)
Before beginning your oil change, ensure you have all necessary tools and materials: appropriate oil (as calculated above), oil filter, drain pan, funnel, wrenches (typically 15mm for drain plug), oil filter wrench, gloves, and safety glasses. Park the vehicle on level ground and engage the parking brake. Allow the engine to cool for at least 30 minutes if recently operated to avoid burns from hot oil.
Draining Procedure (20-25 minutes)
Locate the oil drain plug underneath the vehicle. The Ford Transit Connect drain plug is typically positioned on the rear side of the oil pan. Place your drain pan underneath, then use a 15mm wrench to loosen the drain plug. Turn counterclockwise slowly until oil begins to seep, then remove completely by hand (wearing gloves). Allow the oil to drain completely for 15-20 minutes. Meanwhile, locate and remove the oil filter using an oil filter wrench. The filter is typically accessible from underneath the vehicle near the front of the engine.
Engine oil can reach temperatures exceeding 200°F (93°C). Always ensure the engine has cooled sufficiently before attempting to remove the drain plug or filter. Use appropriate personal protective equipment including heat-resistant gloves and eye protection.
Refill & Verification (15-20 minutes)
Install the new oil filter after applying a thin film of fresh oil to the gasket. Hand-tighten only – do not over-tighten. Reinstall the drain plug with a new washer if required, tightening to 18-22 ft-lbs (24-30 Nm). Refill the engine with the calculated amount of oil using a funnel. Start the engine and allow it to run for 1-2 minutes, then check for leaks around the filter and drain plug. Turn off the engine, wait 2-3 minutes, then check the oil level using the dipstick. Add additional oil in 0.25 quart increments if necessary.
