Understanding Jeep Patriot Oil Capacity Specifications
The Jeep Patriot, produced from 2007 to 2017, features two primary engine configurations that determine oil capacity requirements. Accurate oil volume measurement is critical for maintaining proper lubrication, cooling, and engine longevity. This comprehensive guide provides detailed specifications based on official manufacturer data, technical service bulletins, and real-world maintenance experience.
Complete Oil Capacity Data Table
| Model Years | Engine Type | Oil Capacity (with filter) | Oil Capacity (without filter) | Recommended Oil Grade | Oil Filter Part # |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2007-2010 | 2.0L DOHC I4 | 4.5 quarts | 4.2 quarts | SAE 5W-30 Synthetic Blend | MO-041 / 5281090AB |
| 2007-2010 | 2.4L World I4 | 5.2 quarts | 4.9 quarts | SAE 5W-20 or 5W-30 | MO-041 / 68191349AA |
| 2011-2017 | 2.0L Tigershark I4 | 4.5 quarts | 4.2 quarts | SAE 5W-30 Full Synthetic | MO-349 / 68191349AC |
| 2011-2017 | 2.4L Tigershark I4 | 5.2 quarts | 4.9 quarts | SAE 5W-20 Full Synthetic | MO-349 / 68191349AA |
Technical Note: Capacities shown are for complete oil changes including filter replacement. When measuring oil level, always account for residual oil remaining in the engine (approximately 0.2-0.3 quarts). The dipstick reading is the final authority for proper oil level.
Oil Capacity Measurement Methodology
Oil capacity measurements for the Jeep Patriot are derived from the dry fill volume required to reach the “Full” mark on the dipstick after a complete drain and filter change. The calculation accounts for:
- Oil pan volume: Primary reservoir capacity
- Oil filter volume: Standard spin-on filter holds approximately 0.3 quarts
- Engine gallery volume: Oil passages throughout the engine block
- Oil cooler lines (if equipped): Additional capacity in cooling system
Volume Conversion Reference Table
| US Quarts | Liters (Exact) | Imperial Quarts | Application Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4.5 quarts | 4.26 liters | 3.75 imp. qt | 2.0L engine standard fill |
| 5.0 quarts | 4.73 liters | 4.16 imp. qt | Common 5-quart container |
| 5.2 quarts | 4.92 liters | 4.33 imp. qt | 2.4L engine standard fill |
| 5.5 quarts | 5.20 liters | 4.58 imp. qt | Maximum safe capacity |
Step-by-Step Oil Change Procedure
Required Tools: 13mm socket wrench, oil filter wrench, drain pan, funnel, jack and stands, gloves, and 5-6 quarts of recommended oil.
Safety First: Always use proper jack stands when lifting vehicle. Engine should be warm but not hot (operating temperature for 5 minutes then cooled for 10 minutes).
- Park on level surface and engage parking brake
- Remove oil filler cap to allow complete drainage
- Position drain pan under oil pan (13mm drain plug at rear)
- Remove drain plug and allow oil to drain completely (15-20 minutes)
- Remove old oil filter using filter wrench (located near front of engine)
- Apply thin coat of new oil to filter gasket and install new filter
- Reinstall drain plug with new washer (torque to 25 Nm/18.5 ft-lbs)
- Add 5.2 quarts of recommended oil using funnel
- Start engine and run for 1 minute, then check for leaks
- Turn off engine, wait 2 minutes, then check dipstick and add oil if needed
- Reset oil change indicator light if illuminated
