Nissan Versa dashboard warning lights
2026 edition: 17 symbols, deep diagnosis & real repair costs
Check Engine
- Symptoms: rough idle, poor acceleration, strange smells, or no noticeable change.
- Diagnose: 1. Use OBD-II scanner (codes P0xxx). 2. Check gas cap tightness. 3. Inspect vacuum hoses. 4. Scan for Nissan-specific codes (e.g., P0340 cam sensor).
Oil pressure ⚠️
- Symptoms: ticking noises, overheated engine, “low oil” on dash.
- Diagnose: 1. Stop engine immediately. 2. Check dipstick level. 3. Listen for pump whine. 4. Oil pressure test with manual gauge.
Battery / alternator
- Symptoms: dim lights, slow crank, radio resets.
- Diagnose: 1. Test battery voltage (12.6V off, >13.8V running). 2. Check alternator belt tension. 3. Load test battery.
Brake (!)
- Symptoms: soft pedal, squealing, longer stopping distance.
- Diagnose: 1. Check fluid reservoir. 2. Inspect pad thickness. 3. Scan ABS module if light stays on.
ABS light
- Symptoms: normal braking but ABS inactive, possible pump noise.
- Diagnose: 1. Read ABS codes with advanced scanner. 2. Check wheel speed sensors for dirt/damage. 3. Test reluctor ring.
Airbag SRS
- Symptoms: airbag may not deploy, passenger occupant sensor error.
- Diagnose: 1. SRS scanner required. 2. Check connector under seats. 3. Verify clock spring continuity.
TPMS / tire pressure
- Symptoms: blinking then solid light, underinflated tire feel.
- Diagnose: 1. Measure pressure with gauge. 2. Inspect for puncture. 3. Use TPMS tool to trigger sensors.
Coolant temp 🔥
- Symptoms: temp gauge high, steam from hood, coolant smell.
- Diagnose: 1. Check coolant level. 2. Look for leaks. 3. Test thermostat and fan operation.
Power steering EPS
- Symptoms: heavy steering, intermittent assist, warning on dash.
- Diagnose: 1. Check battery voltage (low voltage affects EPS). 2. Scan EPS module for DTCs. 3. Inspect torque sensor and wiring.
Slip / VDC off
- Symptoms: traction control not working, stability control warning.
- Diagnose: 1. Check if accidentally turned off. 2. Scan ABS/VDC module. 3. Inspect steering angle sensor.
Security (key)
- Symptoms: engine cranks but won’t start, flashing red car/key symbol.
- Diagnose: 1. Try second key. 2. Check battery in key fob. 3. Scan BCM for communication errors.
High beam (blue)
- Symptoms: blue indicator when high beams are on.
- Diagnose: Not a fault – if flashing unexpectedly, check stalk or lighting control module.
Fog light (green)
- Symptoms: green lamp symbol when fog lights on.
- Diagnose: If no light, check bulb or relay.
Low fuel
- Symptoms: amber fuel pump symbol, chime.
- Diagnose: Refuel. If light stays on, check sender unit.
Seat belt
- Symptoms: red belt icon, chime.
- Diagnose: Buckle seatbelt. If persists, check occupancy sensor.
Door / trunk ajar
- Symptoms: light with car and open door, interior light may stay on.
- Diagnose: Check all doors, hood, trunk. Faulty latch sensor.
Master warning
- Symptoms: red triangle with exclamation, usually accompanied by other message.
- Diagnose: Check vehicle information display for specific warning (door, low fuel, etc.).
Diagnostic deep dive: from code to fix
| Code | Description | Possible fix | Est. cost (parts+labor) |
|---|---|---|---|
| P0420 | Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1) | Replace catalytic converter (often due to oil consumption on 1.6L) | $950 – $1,700 |
| P0300 | Random/multiple cylinder misfire | Spark plugs, ignition coils, fuel injectors, compression test | $180 – $800 |
| P0101 | Mass air flow circuit range/performance | Clean or replace MAF sensor, check intake leaks | $150 – $450 |
| P0340 | Camshaft position sensor circuit (bank 1) | Replace cam sensor (common on Versa 1.6L) | $140 – $300 |
| P0011 | Intake valve timing control performance (bank 1) | Oil change, VVT solenoid, timing chain tensioner | $200 – $900 |
| P0455 | EVAP system large leak | Tighten gas cap, replace EVAP canister, check hoses | $0 – $350 |
| C1109 | Battery voltage low (ABS module) | Charge battery, check alternator, ABS module ground | $100 – $550 |
| B0020 | Driver airbag circuit resistance high | Check clock spring, connector under seat | $200 – $650 |
| U1000 | CAN communication line error | Inspect CAN bus wiring, check for moisture in modules | $200 – $1,200 |
Nissan Versa model year notes (2010–2024)
- 2010–2012: Prone to timing chain cover oil leaks, P0011 VTC code. Also CVT judder (update transmission software).
- 2013–2019: Common P0420 due to catalytic converter failure. Rear ABS sensor corrosion (C1109).
- 2020–2024: Newer platform; occasional TPMS sensor battery drain, and infotainment-related CAN bus errors (U1000).
What if multiple lights come on at once?
If you see several warning lights (ABS, brake, slip, engine) it’s often a sign of a voltage problem (failing alternator or bad ground) or a CAN bus communication fault. Start by measuring battery voltage with engine running – should be 13.8–14.8V. If low, check alternator. Also inspect the main ground cable from battery to chassis. In rare cases, a failed ABS module can flood the network with errors.
Resetting warning lights after repair
Most lights (check engine, ABS, airbag) require a scan tool to clear codes. For TPMS, after adjusting tire pressure, drive above 25 mph for 10 minutes to reset. For oil maintenance light (if equipped), follow: turn ignition off, then press and hold trip reset while turning key to ON – wait for oil light to flash. Refer to owner’s manual for exact steps.
Never reset a warning light without fixing the underlying problem – it will return and may cause damage.
