Audi S4 dashboard warning lights

Every S4 generation shares the same colour logic, but component failures evolve. This guide covers 18+ warning lamps, detailed troubleshooting trees, and up‑to‑date labour rates. Developed with master Audi technicians.
⚡ Check engine (MIL)

Issues: Misfire, O2 sensor, cat, evap, turbo/supercharger, fuel system.

Symptoms: Flashing/steady light, power loss, rough idle, increased fuel, possible smoke.

Diagnosis (multiple options):

  • OBD2 scan (generic + manufacturer specific via VCDS/ODIS).
  • Live data: fuel trims, O2 switching, boost pressure (specified vs actual).
  • Mechanical checks: compression test, vacuum test, boost leak test (smoke machine).
  • B9 S4: inspect PCV valve, injector faults (direct injection).
diagnosis $140–$220 / repair $90 (sensor) – $2,800 (cat + labour)
🛢️ Oil pressure / level

Issues: Low oil, faulty pump, clogged pickup (especially 2.7T), pressure switch.

Symptoms: Red oil can, ticking, top-end noise, overheating, possible engine rattle.

Diagnosis:

  • Mechanical oil pressure test (warm engine, spec >0.3 bar at idle, >2 bar at 2000rpm).
  • Inspect oil filter housing, pressure relief valve.
  • B6/B7 S4: chain tensioner issues; check upper camshaft adjuster.
  • Scan for low pressure codes (P0520 etc).
$80–$1800 (pump & labour $1300–$1800 on 3.0T)
🛑 Brake (red)

Issues: Low fluid, worn pads, hydraulic failure, handbrake switch.

Symptoms: Red light, pedal travel increased, squeal, vibration.

Diagnosis:

  • Check fluid level & condition (moisture content).
  • Measure pad thickness (front/rear wear sensors).
  • Brake caliper piston retraction test.
  • Scan ABS module for brake switch faults.
$60–$650 (fluid flush $130–$200, pads $250–$500)
🚫 ABS / ESP

Issues: Wheel speed sensor, tone ring, ABS module, steering angle sensor.

Symptoms: Yellow ABS/ESP light, speedo dead, traction control off.

Diagnosis:

  • Scan ABS control unit (C102D, G44/G45, etc).
  • Oscilloscope check of sensor signal / multimeter resistance.
  • Inspect reluctor rings for damage (B5 S4 rear rings often crack).
  • Steering angle sensor calibration via diagnostic.
$100–$900 (sensor $80–$200, module rebuild $450–$700)
💥 Airbag (SRS)

Issues: Occupant detection (passenger), seat connector, clock spring, crash data.

Symptoms: Airbag light stays on, passenger airbag off light.

Diagnosis:

  • Check yellow connectors under seats (corrosion).
  • Use VCDS to read SRS fault memory (e.g. 65535, 00588).
  • Test clock spring continuity with multimeter.
  • B8/B9: occupancy mat in passenger seat may fail.
$120–$1100 (clock spring $280–$450, mat $900)
⚙️ TPMS

Issues: Low pressure, dead sensor, module communication, aftermarket wheels.

Symptoms: Yellow tyre symbol, pressure warnings, no reading.

Diagnosis:

  • Manually check all tyre pressures.
  • Use TPMS trigger tool to wake sensors (check battery life).
  • B8.5/B9: direct sensors; check sensor IDs in MMI.
  • Reset via MMI / OBD after correction.
$0–$400 (sensor $80–$160 each + reprogram)
⚠️ EPC

Issues: Throttle body, accelerator pedal sensor, brake light switch, engine control module.

Symptoms: Yellow EPC light, reduced power, limp mode, poor throttle response.

Diagnosis:

  • Read engine fault codes (P2135, P2122, etc).
  • Check accelerator pedal position sensor (two tracks).
  • Perform throttle body alignment (basic setting via VCDS).
  • Brake light switch adjustment (common on B6/B7).
$90–$600 (pedal sensor $180–$300, throttle body $500)
⚙️ Transmission (AT)

Issues: Low fluid, mechatronic unit, torque converter, speed sensors.

Symptoms: PRNDS flashing, harsh shifts, gear fails, limp mode.

Diagnosis:

  • Check ATF level and condition (DL501 / ZF8).
  • Scan transmission module (VAG codes: P17xx).
  • Adaptations reset / gearbox recalibration.
  • Mechatronic unit test (solenoid resistances).
$200–$4500 (mechatronic rebuild $2000–$3500)
💡 Lamp failure

Issues: Burnt bulb, LED failure, wiring, bulb check module.

Symptoms: Yellow bulb symbol, exterior light out, flickering.

Diagnosis:

  • Visual inspection of all exterior lights.
  • Check bulb socket voltage/ground.
  • Inspect trailer hitch wiring if present.
  • Scan central electric module for open circuits.
$10–$300 (bulb $5–$150 for LED units)
💧 Washer fluid

Issues: Low fluid, faulty sensor, wiring.

Symptoms: Yellow windscreen symbol, warning “washer fluid low”.

Diagnosis:

  • Check fluid level and sensor float movement.
  • Test sensor resistance (normally closed/open).
  • Inspect connector for corrosion.
$0–$80 (sensor $25–$50)
🔒 Immobilizer

Issues: Key not recognised, steering lock module, coil ring.

Symptoms: Yellow key symbol, car cranks but no start, flashing immo light.

Diagnosis:

  • Try second key; check key battery.
  • Read immobilizer faults in instrument cluster.
  • Check antenna ring around ignition lock.
  • Possible ECU/immo mismatch after swap.
$100–$800 (key coding $200–$450)
