DPF / Exhaust Filter Warning
Issue: Diesel particulate filter (DPF) saturation or differential pressure sensor fault. Common on 840d xDrive.
Symptoms:
- Reduced power, forced regeneration active
- High idle speed, smell of hot exhaust
- “Exhaust filter full” iDrive message
Detailed diagnosis:
AdBlue (SCR) Warning
Issue: Low AdBlue level, poor quality, or NOx sensor fault. After ~1000 miles, engine won’t start.
Symptoms: “AdBlue low, engine will not start after X miles” countdown.
Diagnosis steps:
Steering Lock / EPS Malfunction
Issue: Electronic steering column lock jammed, or EPS motor failure. Common on early G14.
Symptoms: Red steering wheel icon, “Steering lock faulty” β car may not start.

Issue: ZF 8HP gearbox overheating β towing, track use, or low fluid.

Night Vision Camera Fault
Issue: Thermal imaging camera misaligned or lens blockage.
Symptoms: No pedestrian highlight, system unavailable.
Diagnosis: Check camera cover, recalibrate with BMW diagnostic after front-end repair.
Driving Assistance Restricted
Issue: KAFAS camera dirty, calibration off, or radar sensor blocked.
Diagnosis: Clean windshield area in front of interior mirror. Read faults (e.g. 801224).

- ISTA+/Rheingold: read all control units, perform guided fault finding, actuations (e.g. regen, EPB reset).
- Multimeter & scope: check LIN bus communication to sensors (TPMS, IBS).
- Smoke machine: evap leaks, boost leaks (N63/B58).
- Thermal camera: locate exhaust leaks or failing injectors.

Warning: Drivetrain malfunction + CEL
Diagnosis: ISTA scan showed misfire cylinder 5 (B58). Further test revealed spark plug worn and ignition coil degraded.
Repair: Replaced all 6 spark plugs + coil pack. Cost: $680 parts + 1.5h labor = $920 total. After clearing adaptations, warning gone.
