Priority & colour stop vs service
X-Type rule: 70% of amber warnings are connector corrosion (under bonnet fuse box, rear ABS rings). Always start with simple visual.
⚙️ Check Engine (MIL)
Issue: Jaguar AJ-V6 / Zetec – misfire (coil packs), O2 sensor, VVT solenoid, timing chain tensioner (pre‑2005), EVAP leak.
- Rough idle, hesitation, increased fuel consumption, MIL flashing = catalyst damaging misfire
- Common codes: P1316 (misfire), P1564 (battery voltage), P0420 (cat efficiency)
- OBD2 scanner – freeze frame, mode 6 misfire counts.
- Coil swap test – move suspected coil, see if misfire moves.
- Vacuum smoke test – intake leaks (common plastic elbow).
- Fuel pressure test – pump/filter (3.5 bar).
- Compression test – exhaust cam timing (tensioner failure).
- Jaguar IDS – cam/crank correlation, VVT angle.
🛞 ABS / DSC / traction
Issue: X-Type specific – rear ABS ring cracks, front sensor corrosion, yaw rate sensor, steering angle sensor misalignment.
- ABS light on, DSC light on, speedo dead (rear sensor failure), pulsation absent
- Intermittent: driving over bumps triggers warning
- ABS scanner (Autel, Foxwell) – read C1xxx, C1155 (rear left) most common.
- Sensor resistance – 800–1500Ω, AC voltage while spinning (0.1–0.7V).
- Visual inspection – reluctor ring (cracked teeth).
- Steering angle reset – full left-right-left, center, calibrate.
- Module communication – check 5V supply, ground at ABS controller.
🪑 Airbag SRS
Issue: Passenger occupancy mat (B1992), clockspring, seat belt tensioner, crash sensor.
- Light stays on after 6 seconds, intermittent, horn/radio controls dead (clockspring)
- SRS scan (not generic OBD2) – B1190, B2292, B1884.
- Under-seat connector – unplug, clean, zip-tie to prevent slack.
- Clockspring continuity – horn + cruise control.
- Occupancy simulator – bypass mat for test (only for diagnosis).
🔋 Charging system
Issue: Alternator regulator, worn brushes, broken belt, battery sensor (LIN bus).
- Red battery symbol, dash lights dim, “Battery not charging” message
- Voltage test – idle: 13.6–14.8V ; off: 12.4V+ .
- Load test – carbon pile (CCA check).
- Ripple test – AC ripple >100mV = diode failure.
- Battery sensor test – LIN signal with scope.
- Belt tension – X-Type automatic tensioner wear.
🛢️ Oil pressure
Issue: Low oil level, sender failure, pump wear, pickup clogged (sludge).
- Red oil can, ticking lifters, low pressure gauge reading
- Dipstick + history – oil level, last change.
- Sender test – swap with mechanical gauge (0.5-1 bar idle).
- Pressure transducer – T‑fitting, compare.
- Oil filter – anti-drain back valve stuck.
- Engine internal – bearing clearance (advanced).
🌡️ Coolant temperature
Issue: Low coolant, stuck thermostat, fan failure, water pump impeller (plastic), air lock.
- Gauge in red, steam, coolant smell, loss of power
- Pressure tester – coolant leaks (hose, radiator, expansion tank).
- Infrared thermometer – thermostat opening (88°C).
- Fan operation – A/C on, or scan tool command.
- Combustion leak – block tester (CO2 in coolant).
- Water pump weep hole – coolant trail.
⚙️ Transmission fault
Issue: JF506E 5-speed – solenoid block failure, valve body wear, torque converter, conductor plate.
- Flashing ‘S’ or ‘D’, harsh 2-3 shift, no reverse, stuck in 3rd gear
- Fluid check – level on flat, 50°C, brown smell = burnt clutches.
- OBD2 codes – P0700, P073x, P0741, P076x.
- Solenoid resistance – main control valve: 4.8–6.2Ω.
- Pressure test – line pressure low (pump/regulator).
- Adaptation reset – with IDS / SDD, then relearn.
⚡ Glow plug / DPF (diesel)
Issue: Failed glow plug, glow relay, DPF soot accumulation, pressure sensor.
- Hard cold start, smoke, DPF light, limited performance
- Glow plug resistance – 0.5–1.5Ω (open = failed).
- Glow relay control – 12V after glow cycle.
- DPF differential pressure – sensor reading at idle vs rev.
- Forced regeneration – via JLR SDD.
🛑 Brake system
Issue: Low brake fluid, worn pads, handbrake switch, brake circuit failure.
- Red (!) symbol, long pedal travel, warning “BRAKE”
- Fluid level sensor – float stuck, top up.
- Pad thickness – sensor wire (if equipped).
- Handbrake switch – under lever.
- ABS module – internal hydraulic fault.
🌀 Power steering
Issue: Electric (2.0D) or hydraulic (V6) – fluid leak, pump whine, torque sensor.
- Heavy steering, whining, warning light “P/S”
🏎️ TPMS
Issue: Sensor battery dead, sensor damaged, relearn required.
- Light on, pressure not displayed, “TYRE MONITOR FAULT”
- TPMS tool – trigger sensor, listen for horn.
- Visual – broken valve stem.

⛽ Fuel low
Issue: Running out of fuel, sender failure, gauge stuck.
